Board of Directors

The ORCA Swim Team is run by a board of 6 volunteers who serve 2-year terms. Elections take place at our annual team meeting in September. Read a little bit about our current board members below. Swimming has always been a big part of my life. I grew up in Minnesota where I began swimming at age 5. My fondest memories from my childhood were those with my teammates. I took a few years break from the sport while I attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison and played alto saxophone in the marching band, but I found my way back my senior year when I swam with my college's club team. Not long after that, I began doing triathlons and fell in love. Since moving to Seattle, I've gotten involved with both the ORCA Swim Team and Seattle Frontrunners, two groups that have become family to me. As an ORCA Co-captain, I love greeting new swimmers and planning social events to help people connect outside the pool! When I'm not chasing that black line at the bottom of the pool or running the streets of Seattle, I can be found conducting running shoe research at Brooks or board gaming with friends.

Swimming is amazing!

DeBear Shore, Treasurer

DeBear grew up in Alaska and moved to Seattle at 23. An avid swimmer since they were five, breaststroke is their favorite stroke and they fit as many medley sets into their practice as they can. While they enjoy the fitness aspect of swimming with Orca Swim Team, one of DeBear’s goals is to attend an IGLA meet internationally. When they are on dry land, DeBear is traveling, reading, studying for their business degree, maintaining the Orca Swim Team’s books as Treasurer, or playing with their dog, DeMoose.

During the pandemic, I was fortunate to discover that the ORCA Swim Team existed here in Seattle. The timing was better than expected because the ORCA Swim Team fit a need that I was craving at the time - a community where I could feel safe, protected, and welcome. As co-captain, I want to ensure that the ORCA Swim Team provides all that I was craving and more to people of all stripes in, as well as, out of the pool. My hobbies, when I can fit them in, include running, hiking, surfing, biking, and . . . If it gets me moving, I’ll probably end up loving it.

Chelsea Nesvig, Co-Captain

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love being in water. This started with swim classes and lessons at the YMCA in my hometown of Tacoma, WA at a very young age and led to regular swimming throughout my childhood. I was on my high school swim team for four years and co-captain my senior year. In my twenties and thirties, I swam solo laps on occasion, but began to think about finding a team to swim with again. Thankfully, I joined the Orcas in 2019 and discovered a new love for Masters swimming!

Outside of the pool, I’m president of the UW Libraries Union (Local SEIU 925) and also enjoy baking, biking, listening to music on long walks, and spending time with my pet bunny rabbit.

As Orca co-captain, I’m already enjoying welcoming new swimmers to our team and getting more involved with our social activities!
